With heavy hearts, we announce that Barbara Mitchell (née Browne) passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 86.
She is survived by her husband Donald of 56 years; children, Shaun and Colleen; grandchildren, Kiera and Konnor (Emily). Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Tom and Helen Browne, as well as her brother Glenn Browne.
Barbara was born on June 28, 1939, in Winnipeg. She grew up in the North End, graduated from Tec Voc High School, and began working for the government as a secretary. She later worked as a secretary for the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1957 she met Donald at the Winnipeg Badminton Club; they married in 1969. Their son Shaun was born in 1971, followed by daughter Colleen in 1972. After raising her children, Barbara returned to school to become a medical secretary and spent her final working years at Health Sciences Centre with the Kidney Transplant Team.
After retirement, Barbara and Donald sold their Winnipeg home and divided their time between their cabin at Betula Lake in summer and a place in Weslaco, Texas, in winter. They later sold the cabin, purchased a home in Sanford, and eventually returned to Winnipeg.
Barbara was known for her wicked sense of humour and for playfully calling herself the "5 B’s: Beautiful, Blonde, Buxom, Barbara Browne.” Friends and family also knew her as Nana B or Barbie. She was famous for hosting happy hours at Betula Lake and for her turnip puff at Christmas and Thanksgiving. She will be greatly missed by all friends and family.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will take place at a later date.
